Disneyland’s Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is an amazing attraction that takes Guests on an incredible journey through the seas in an experience so magical only Disney could create. This process works so well, the Disneyland Resort was recognized in 2009 with the state of California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for this and other earth-friendly efforts. The water is then refilled at the Disneyland Resort from the same system. Now, every time we must drain a large body of water, it is sent to the OCWD’s Groundwater Replenishment System, where it is purified and added to Orange County’s underground water supply. After sitting unused for ten years, the lagoon was demolished and filled in. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with Nautilus-themed submarines, opened in 1971 and closed in 1994.

The Disneyland Resort began working with the Orange County Water District (OCWD) in 2009, when Paradise Bay in Disney California Adventure park was drained to prepare for “World of Color.” This partnership allows the water we drain to be treated and stored, instead of being released to the ocean through storm drains. Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World had an underseas experience similar to Disneyland’s Submarine Voyage. Rafa, a former Disneyland Resort Ambassador, started his Disney journey in 2016 as a Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage attractions cast member. To accomplish this work, 5 million gallons of water had to be drained from the lagoon and later replaced. Three of the many Tomorrowland cast members who contributed to this project are Senior Stage Manager Rafa Barron, and Attractions Leads Gareth Shamp and Daniel Carlos. The ride closed in mid-January of this year for the rehab: Originally opening as Submarine Voyage, the Finding Nemo version opened in 2007 and allows guests to “embark on an undersea research expedition to an active volcano and dive into a new Finding Nemo adventure along the way.” Many of the attraction’s scenes, rockwork and coral have been refreshed and repainted as a result, guests will see a more colorful and vibrant underwater experience than ever before. Quite a bit of work has been done over the course of this year to renew this favorite attraction. We are excited to return to the big blue world once again when Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland park reopens September 27, following an extended refurbishment.
